The baroclinic instability is fueling the world ocean with eddies. This mecanism is actually the way by which energy is transfered from the large-scale forcing to the meso-scale flow. The question then arises to understand what is the fate of this energy. We try to answer this question with a model of turbulence that is designed to mimic the dynamics of a subtropical gyre. We impose a backround state for which the vertical strucure of the water column vary smoothly in the basin. This flow gives rise to a wide range of instabilities. We show how these variations throughout the gyre is key to understand the transfer of energy to large scales and to small scales.
