How to know which paradox you should solve.

During the past decade new estimates of the core's thermal conductivity proposed by theoretical calculations were the starting point of a whirlwind of theories on how to explain the geodynamo generation mechanisms, questioning its longevity as well as the age of the inner core. In this talk I would like to emphasise how it is important to recognise how estimates of material properties at core conditions are found, and why it is important to understand the theory and approximations behind different sources of information. Ongoing measurements of thermal conductivity and related physical properties (electrical resistivity) have continued to challenge the picture of high thermal conductivity in the core, with mounting evidence of a thermal conductivity quite close to traditional values. I will conclude pointing out to what extent extrapolation and theoretical expectations define what we know of core dynamics and which of these may need further experimental examination in order to better understand the geodynamo.
