Seismic risk in France and regulations

Of course, earthquakes cannot be prevented. However, it is not earthquakes that kill but buildings that collapse. We can thus protect ourselves from earthquakes by proposing a technical framework that makes homes resistant: this is the very objective of seismic regulation. This regulation, which aims to avoid the collapse of buildings, evolves according to the knowledge of land movements and construction techniques.

The seismic motion against which to protect against is given in the form of acceleration of the reference ground resulting from a probabilistic assessment of the seismic hazard.
