Extraction of cosmogenic nuclides

Since 2006, ISTerre is equipped with a laboratory dedicated to the extraction of cosmogenic nuclides. This platform is currently operational for beryllium 10 (10Be) and aluminum 26 (26Al).

– Technical support
The laboratory meets the demands in the frame of projects developed at ISTerre and its national and international partners with respect to Earth surface processes.

The laboratory is composed of two rooms to maintain a high level of quality and security conform to international standards :

  • A pre-treatment room dedicated to the purification of crushed samples. The samples are sorted by magnetic separator (Frantz) and by a series of mechanical process and chemical etching.
  • A chemical laboratory dedicated to the purification of beryllium (or aluminum) samples by separation in ion exchange columns and by etching.

Sample analyses are done in close collaboration with the “Instrument National” ASTER (CEREGE, Aix Provence).
The capacity of sample processing is at 120 to 150 samples per year.
