ICP-MS

Auteur de la page : Sylvain Campillo

The platform’s plasma spectrometry equipment offers a complete range of elemental analyses in majors, traces and ultra-traces, for samples with various matrices.
The platform also offers access to a "clean" preparation room or Geochemical White Room exclusively dedicated to preparations for elemental analyses in majors, traces and ultra-traces but also isotopes (mineralizations, dilutions, separations, preparation of standards, etc.)
The chemistry room is ISO7 class with a set of consumables specific to geochemical preparations (Teflon containers, ultra-pure water, high purity reagents, etc.)

The elemental mass spectrometry room in the ISTerre laboratory includes two instruments :
Thermo Electron XSeries-2
Agilent 7900 coupled to an ESI PrepFast IC module

The equipment is mainly used in the context of research projects at ISTerre and OSUG in collaboration, and more rarely in the context of external services.

Thermo Xseries-2

The ICP-MS Thermo Xseries-2 is an instrument dedicated to the elemental analysis of rocks, sediments, earth, sludge, peat, various plants, after chemical mineralisation, but also synthetic materials or more simply various liquid solutions (hydrothermal water, groundwater or surface water...)

Agilent 7900

The Agilent 7900 ICP-MS is also dedicated to elemental analysis but with lower detection limits and is therefore dedicated to very poor samples. It will also eventually allow speciation to be carried out via the IC module.

ICP-MS THERMO XSeries-2 & Agilent 7900
Scope of use Mainly collaborations
Technical specifications Sample types
Aqueous, with preliminary sampling under specific conditions and packaging (contact us beforehand).
Solid, in the form of homogeneous powder and specific solutions (contact us beforehand).

technical data
Measurements from ppt to ppm in solution according to the elements (9 decades).
Average sample analysis time : approximately 10 minutes (including rinsing) for the Xserie2, under development for the 7900 (excluding blank, duplicate and standard analyses)

ICP-MS Agilent 7900 is a single Quad ICP mass spectrometer with
— >High matrix tolerance due to a robust plasma
— >High matrix introduction (UHMI) up to 25% total dissolved solids
— >Effective collision and reactive mode to improves accuracy (removing polyatomic interferences)
— >High sensitivity and low detection limits closed to ppt
— >Wide dynamic range detector up to 10+9 decade, allow analysis of majors and trace in one run

Can be update for single particule analysis or laser ablation

ICP-MS Agilent 7900 coupled to an Elemental Scientific PrepFast IC (—> in progress)

-->allow Automated tuning of the ICP-MS
— >Allow automated inline calibration for total metal and speciation
— >Can dilute automatically samples
— >FAST uptake, stabilization, & washout
— >switch automatically between total metal analysis and speciation

Permit to save time and improve laboratory efficiency by eliminating labor-intensive standard preparation and sample dilution, and also save consumption and waste
