Greenhouse gas emissions balance

Public institutions with more than 250 employees are required to carry out a GHG assessment and to propose actions to reduce their emissions. This applies to ISTerre’s supervisory bodies which are CNRS, UGA, IRD and IFSSTAR. At the laboratory level, we wanted to have a precise idea of our emissions, and to have a decision support tool to reduce our impact.

In practice, the work was carried out in 4 months by a M1 trainee in economics (Maxence Morel), thanks to the collaboration of many colleagues for the collection of data and to the precious involvement of Odile Blanchard (lecturer at the Grenoble Applied Economics Laboratory, GAEL), an expert in GHG assessments, who co-supervised Maxence.

The assessment and the tool developed (GESTerre) and the methodology are made available to laboratories that wish to use it or be inspired by it for their own assessment. However, the 1point5 GHG tool, created by the Labos1point5 collective, is now available for French research laboratories, and is recommended by the CNRS scientific direction. The scope of the GHG 1point5 tool is smaller than that of GESTerre, but is being expanded.
